A. Beowulf
- One of the most famous heroic poetry was Beowulf .
- It is the greatest old English Poem.
- Author of Beowulf is still unknown.
- It talks about the heroic adventure of a hero known as Beowulf.
- Story takes place in Denmark.
- Hero is a young warrior from Southern Sweden who went to Denmark to help the King Hrothgar. (King Hrothgar had a great hall where people used to seat and there was a lake monster who troubled people.)
- Beowulf killed the monster Grendel.
- After Beowulf slays him, Grendel's mother attacks the hall and is then defeated.
- later Beowulf became the king and rules his country peacefully for 50 years.
- In that period of 50 years Beowulf defeat a dragon and in the battle Beowulf was wounded and died.
- This poem has alliterative sense and stress poetic lines without rhymes.
- Beowulf accuses Unferth of killing of his Kith and Kin and of unprovoked war. (NET Paper-3 July 2016 question).
B. Waldere
- This poem is about the Legend of "Walter of Aquitaine".
- It is the story of Waldere (Walter) and Hildegyth who fall in love and steal treasure from the court of Attila, where they were held hostage.
- Guthhere, who is the king of the Burgundians, and Hagena was after them and the treasure.
- The poem is about the conflict that is about to take place between the two parties.
C. The Fight of Finnsburg
- Fight between Hanef and his 60 retainer are besieged at "Finn's Fort" and attempt to hold off their attackers.
D. Widsith
- Also known as "The Traveller's Song".
- A poem in which the poet talks about the great kings and the heroes who has existed in Europe in Heroic age.
