72. “Why can’t we be friends now’ ... it’s what I want. It’s what you want.’ But the horses didn’t want it – they swerved apart; the earth didn’t want it.” At the end of A Passage to India Forster suggests that

1. If Fielding and Aziz want, they can be friends.
2. Probably if the Indians and the English want, they can still be friends.
3. Though Fielding and Aziz want, the horses and the earth of India do not want the English and the Indians to be friends, not yet.
4. The East is east and the West is west and the twain shall never meet.
